Girl with the Sex-Ray Eyes

Girl with the sex ray eyes
This is an example of a good movie of this type. The story is creative, the women are hot and the costumes are outrageous! The only fault I have is some of the sexual scenes are a bit too long. However, this is a very funny movie with good writing and humor. I strongly recommend it for those who enjoy fun, sexy films of the B variety.

The movie's great came in just in time no scratches of any kind nothing more or less.

Stitches

An Unapologetically Campy Horror/Comedy That Revels In Its Own Brand Of Lunacy
I am aware that some people might absolutely loathe the horror/comedy hybrid "Stitches" and that's a perfectly reasonable reaction. Is it a great movie? Well, it certainly won't be picking up any Oscars. But as sheer lunacy, I am quite in love with this over-the-top bit of ridiculousness! Filmmaker Conor McMahon displays an ample appreciation for the cheesy splatter-fests of yore. In fact, this seems to be a throw-back to the campy horror films that flooded the video market in the eighties. He takes a supremely silly premise, in this case a murderous clown who has been reanimated from the afterlife, and runs with it. With copious amounts of humorous gore, each retribution killing is staged to be more outlandish than the last. Nothing is real. The effects are comic at best and the mechanics of the deaths are ludicrous (forget logic, anatomy, or basic biology and enjoy), but the movie absolutely revels in its own madness. Some might complain that the film isn't scary enough, but I'll...

I JUST DIED IN YOUR ARMS TONIGHT,
Stitches (Ross Noble) is a child's party clown. It doesn't take long for a group of sugar high rambunctious ten year old kids to kill him in a freak dishwasher accident. From ancient Druid/Egyptian clown ritual we know that a clown's spirit doesn't rest if he doesn't finish the party. Six years later, another birthday is held for Tommy (Tommy Knight) and our clown is back for revenge.

This was a fun film, reminding me of many of the 80's cult classics. The killer has personality. The slasher aspect is done in a diverse and enjoyable fashion. While the killing is going on, the film cuts to another scene that "mirrors" the situation. I love slasher film that have a little "artistic" value.

The special effects were cheap, Troma style by design to exemplify the clown aspect.

Parental Guide; F-bomb, brief sex and nudity (nipple slip). Good Redbox rental.

Stitches works on every Level..
Stitches is a near flawless Slasher /Comedy.An offering from Ireland All I can do is thank them.
Ross Noble as Stitches was joy to watch as was most of the cast, it was a great ensemble. If you like hard core gore and off the wall humor and "did that really just happen" moments you will love this film.
Stitches gets violently killed during a prank at a kids party. The kids were mean bratty and caused his death. Enter 6 years later when the kids that did this are in high school and Stitches rises from the dead to wreak havoc and make it rain blood at the party. What ensues next is one of the most enjoyable, hilarious and goriest slasher/Comedies I have seen in a very long time. The deaths are so fun and creative and the one liners are enough to make you lol,I say do yourself a favor and buy the blu ray or DVD,you will want to watch it again and again..

Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One - Avengers Assembled (10-Disc Limited Edition Six-Movie Collector's Set) [Blu-ray]

It finally arrives.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase I Boxed set is the big promotional release containing all of the (current) canonical movies leading up to the release of Avengers that was captained by Joss Whedon. These are: Iron Man, Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Marvel's The Avengers. This series sets up the first half of Whedon's vision for the Marvel cinematic future, with the Thanos (the purple-skinned bad guy that was finally revealed at the end of the Avengers) being the series' primary antagonist in coming features...

For those wondering why you cant pre-order
"In August 2012, luggage company Rimowa GmbH, who developed the briefcase for The Avengers, filed suit against Marvel Studios and Buena Vista Home Entertainment in U.S. federal court, complaining that "Marvel did not obtain any license or authorization from Rimowa to make replica copies of the cases for any purpose". The set has since been delayed."

don't listen to all those 1-star ratings
Can't take the time to respond to all those negative 1-star complaints, especially with all the misinformation down there.

The retail price of this didn't change. Those who pre-ordered early got discounted pricing. Deep discounted pricing. If you weren't able to pre-order early or read the retail listing to determine your purchase date, don't complain through a review.

Amazon and Marvel did not screw us with a delay. Those who ordered before the lawsuit got the blu-ray of Avengers FOR FREE. That was fantastic service on their part. It shows that they weren't interested in ripping money from us. We didn't have to buy Avengers twice while waiting. Thank you!

You're not paying a lot per movie. If you want the movies, go buy them separately. I'm sure there's plenty good sales on them this month. If you want a COLLECTOR'S SET, buy this. Your money is paying for useless, fun, fanboy crap. And for fanboys, it's awesome.

As for the new...

Father's Day (Blu-ray DVD Combo)

Violent and zany film gets good blu-ray release
Ahhh, Father's Day...where to begin? The violence. The butt rape. Revenge. Demons. Strippers with chainsaws. Maple syrup. Tasty berries. A sexy priest. A gay prostitute. Did I mention the stripper with the chainsaw?

Father's Day is a wild, violent, sometimes trippy, sometimes old-school, always fun little flick best viewed at night (the film even opens with a commercial telling you you're watching it late at night, a midnight movie so to speak) and with a group of friends who are ready to laugh.

Boy watches father raped and killed, gets eye cut out, grows up, wants revenge, kills wrong person, goes to prison, 10 years later is let out, seeks peace in the woods. That's only the first 5 minutes! What happens next will please fans of other Troma releases, as well as fans of "Hobo With A Shotgun" and "Planet Terror", two other films that are a little more well-known but equally as good.

The film gets even crazier when our group of heroes go to hell,...

Wow, this movie is nuts.
The guys who made this are clearly insane. Violent, weird, and funny, this is everything you want in 90 minutes of escapism. Highly recommended!!!

Father's Day ???
Yep Father's Day from the twisted minds of Astron 6 & Troma don't think you can get much more twisted than that come a warped flick about a "Father's Day" killer. This group will take you on one wild ride. This set is great comes with movie on Blu-Ray & DVD with DVD loaded with extras and CD Soundtrack of film which is pretty cool.

20/30/40

Hidden gem.
20:30:40 is a light-hearted, warm comedy starring Sylvia Chang (who also directs), Lee Sinje ("The Eye"-2002, "Divergence"", Re-cycle", "Missing"), Rene Liu ("A World Without Thieves"), Tony Leung Ka Fai ("The Lover", "Double Vision", "The Twins Effect II", "Zhou Yu's Train", "The Myth") and with an appearance by Anthony Wong ("Time And Tide", "Infernal Affairs", "The Twins Effect", "House Of Fury"). If you enjoy films like "Happy Times" and "Eat Drink Man Woman", then you will also enjoy this film. I have the region 3 Hong Kong release distributed by Columbia Pictures. Strangely, this charming and touching film was never released in the United States.

Boss: Season 2

A Twisted And Twisty Political Soap Opera From Starz Has A Stellar Second (And Last) Season
Of all the shows from 2012, the second season of Starz's "Boss" was my choice for the most improved. Don't get me wrong, I loved Season One of this dark and twisted political soap opera! When I reviewed it, I gave it my highest recommendation. But the show probably connected slightly more with my brain than with my heart. In the ten episodes that comprise this set, the writers managed to streamline the most successful elements of the first year and also give some of the underutilized peripheral characters a greater chance to shine. In truth, this may well be one of my absolute favorites from the 2012 line-up.

The show is filled with Machiavellian maneuvering, duplicitous double dealing, and insane political posturing. Chicago city government (as well as a state election) is the arena for the never ending game and all the players are jostling for the best position and the preservation of their own self interest. The heightened drama unfolds with an operatic grandeur...

Second Season of Boss Hits Too Close to Home for a Season Three
The two seasons of Boss were so close to political truth they were scary. It would not shock me to find out that Starz was asked not to continue the series by those who have influence over the industry for their own political reasons. I also believe that it may have been too "intellectually" challenging for the viewers of the usual action violence as opposed to the undercover targeted violence of political intrigue and scandal. I will miss this series and have recommended it to many who NEVER saw Boss while it was on the air. Too bad, Kelsey Grammar and cast will be sorely missed. I am glad to own season 1 and now to order season 2.

Excellent
I am sorry that this show was cancelled. It is awesome. I hope that a movie is made. 5 Stars.

Knuckleball!

One of the best documentaries I've seen - inspiring and entertaining look at one of the coolest things in sports
I streamed this movie here on Amazon with a 3 day rental.

Fantastic documentary chronicling the stories of two modern knuckleball pitchers and the history of the rare and exciting pitch. Highlights include wonderful cinematography, great storytelling, in-depth historical perspectives, new and old baseball footage, and some charming scenes where the modern knuckleballers are hanging out with some old ones talking baseball. Great pacing throughout, never drags, visually appealing the whole way; I just wish there were more of it!!! (Maybe there are extra scenes in the DVD version, knuckles crossed :D )

It is very interesting for the baseball fan, inspiring for those who don't run with the status quo, and encouraging for those who know their job isn't done yet even through lives with what seems to be more downs than ups. Like the movie says (my paraphrase) "you just throw the ball, and then its up to the world to see where it goes" - and I know there is a breath...

Superb documentary. A must see for baseball fans and non-fans alike.
The mystique surrounding the pitch and the pitchers themselves is the focal point of this excellent documentary. A pitch I threw just fooling around back in the day. It takes a special individual to harness the pitch and survive in the world of Major League Baseball. This film focuses on Tim Wakefield and R.A. Dickey, more Wakefield than anyone else. It also has old timers like Charlie Hough and Phil Niekro. The ups and downs, ins and outs, it's all covered. If you want to get into the minds of the pitchers and learn about the pitch and the game itself, this film should be watched. You won't be sorry you did.

Excellent
Im a huge Mets fan so this documentary was a delight to see, great to see a documentary about Ra Dickey
if your a baseball fan, you gotta see this, worth every penny

Escapee

Pretty lousy
A psycho escapes from a mental hospital, seeking out the college student he had seen on a tour of the facility earlier in the day. Dominic Purcell is an imposing presence but he isn't used particularly well here--he has barely any dialogue and his part could easily have been played by anyone from the WWF stable. While this movie's premise is solid enough Escapee has some of the worst dialogue ever written by sentient human beings. The scenes between the female detective and her boss are cringe-worthy examples of writing that would earn a failing grade in a Screenwriting 101 class. They're seriously that bad. The movie is a lot better when nobody has any lines. Unfortunately that isn't nearly often enough.

OKAY. NOW I'M CREEPED OUT.
This film was originally released in 2011 under the title "Escape" and was changed no doubt because of confusion with the C. Thomas Howell film by the same name. This feature opens with the murder of a woman. We see the killer wash his knife and hands. The hands have no blood, then a moment later they do? Plot point or an Ed Wood moment?

Once our criminal is caught and then escapes from a mental hospital 5 years later, the film focuses on three college girls. Abbey (Christine Evangelista) is the main character. She is serious and studious. She looks similar to the ex-girlfriend Harmon (Dominic Purcell) killed. Lynne (Carly Chaikin) is refreshing with personality, a character I wish would have been more utilized. Then there is Renee (Melissa Ordway) our blonde eye candy in bra and panties. In a different way, I wish they had utilized her more.

Yes, our criminal is headed toward Abbey and there is a twist which was rather meaningless. A twist for the sake of having...

Blu-ray Review: "Escapee"
I love a good slasher movie just as much as the next horror fan. The sub-genre is so hit-and-miss these days. For every "Cold Prey" or "Laid to Rest," we're given 10 more entries that leave you feeling mentally drained by the time the credits roll on them. Anchor Bay Entertainment's [...] is just lucky enough to fall right in the middle of good and bad in the realm of watchable mediocrity.

Psychology student Abby Jones (Christine Evangelista) makes the mistake of locking eyes with a murderous patient named Harmon (Dominic Purcell) while on a class trip to the local mental institute. Unfortunately, Abby resembles Harmon's girlfriend that he brutally butchered. He escapes from the hospital and heads out in search of Abby, leaving a trail of dead bodies in his wake.

Director / writer Campion Murphy put together the right ingredients for "Escapee." The problem is the formula he concocts is overused. This would be a shocking and suspenseful film had it come out in...

Planet Ocean [Blu-ray]

Filmed for the whole world, with love.
I was shocked at some of the low scores this film was getting here, so I felt compelled to voice my opinion and debate some of the complaints I'd read:

Some people felt this film was too depressing or that the science was too basic, but Planet Ocean was crafted to define and showcase the severity of our marine situation. If you viewed the bonus, making-of features, the director explained that he is trying to boost awareness, and educate people from around the world. Many of whom, haven't heard the concerns of climate control or pollution before, like we have. Many people around just don't realize what is at stake. The footage is beautiful and sometimes terrifying, but that keeps even the least scientific-minded among us from changing the channel. This wasn't meant to be "Blue Planet II."

A few complained about that jab on religion, spoken in the film's closing. It is not meant to be offensive or to convert you to a different spiritual view, except to point out...

Great documentary...beautiful put together
I really enjoyed this documentary and found it very informative and interesting. I read some of the reviews here and I can't believe some are calling it 'anti-religious'? Did I miss something? Because I did not get that Impression at all. I think some people are so touchy just because they showed a statue of jesus in Rio De Jenaro. I really don't understand some people's views or way of thinking. The man who narrated this Josh Duhamel happens to be very religious and is catholic (like me). I am considering buying this DVD after renting it from Netflix.

Visually Beautiful and Powerful Message
I'm sure some of my regular readers are scratching their heads right now, wondering why in the world I'm reviewing a documentary about the ocean. I mean, my blog is a genre-focused site, so this is a bit out of the norm. Let's just say that this film is so good and the message so pertinent that I simply had to share it. PLANET OCEAN is an excellent documentary, and I recommend giving it a look.

I love all things that have to deal with the ocean, which is one of the reasons I wanted to review PLANET OCEAN so much. I am particularly fond of being underwater as well, so documentaries on undersea life are sort of a guilty pleasure for me. If you follow my blog, you know that my primary focuses are horror, sci-fi, and fantasy...but, my guilty pleasure sometimes takes precedence and, well, here we are.

The fine folks at Universal were kind enough to send me a Blu-ray version of this film as well, so I had the privilege of seeing it in HD. If you want a good way...

Whoopee!

Is It Really The Season For Makin' Whoopee?
In 1930 Eddie Cantor was at the height of his career when "Whoopee" was made into a motion picture, taken from the 1929 play of the same title produced by "The Great Ziegfeld".
"Whoopee" is the story of two childhood friends who grew up together only to fall in love. One was a "white girl" the other "an Indian". Sally Morgan (Eleanor Hunt) is the girl and Wanenis (Paul Gregory) is the Indian. As time goes by Sally's father forbids the two from ever getting married. This lead Wanenis to leave the small town only to return as fate would have it, on the wedding day of Sheriff Bob Wells (Jack Rutherford) and Sally! Soon Sally has doubts about getting married to Bob when she sees Wenenis again. Now, perhaps your asking yourself, what has any of this got to do with Eddie Cantor? Absolutely nothing. Cantor plays Henry Williams. A neurotic who shys away from the advances made by his nurse, Mary Custer (Ethel Shutta) and perfers the...

CANTOR'S 193O TECHNICOLOR MUSICAL HIT.
Cantor is a state-of-the-art hypochondriac whose imagined poor health causes him to bring many hilarious situations into view. The character he portrays - Henry Williams - is something of a busybody who moves to Arizona for his health's sake and gets himself involved in the affairs of Sally Morgan...The art direction and musical numbers are still fascinating to observe and Cantor is hilarious when he explains blithely that he could die from any one of his several diseases right on the spot. This film - which was co-produced by Florenz Ziegfeld and Samuel Goldwyn - made Eddie Cantor a film star of the early talkies. Based upon THE NERVOUS WRECK by Owen Davis, this primitive Technicolor musical still has the ability to entertain - especially if you are partial to Eddie Cantor's brand of comedy. Look for a 14 (!) year-old Betty Grable as one of the Goldwyn Girls in this opus which was remade in 1944 as the Danny Kaye star-making vehicle UP IN ARMS. As a footnote, Goldwyn opened his...

The static camera rules!
This is certainly an oddity, from the hues of two-strip Technicolor to the scenes of Cantor emerging from his hiding place of an oven (in itself unsettling, given the added hindsight of WWII and Hitler's Ultimate Solution) in blackface. The songs, however, are superb, and "George Olsen's Music" in the background gives this underrated bandleader some nice exposure. Technically "Whoopee" fares better than the Marx Brother's "Animal Crackers" of the same year--they even manage to sneak in a couple of exterior shots!

A Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia [Blu-ray]

Worth a watch!
The only similarity between this movie and the original 'Haunting in Connecticut' is the title. Two totally different movies.. Ghosts of Georgia actually takes place in Georgia and nothing about Connecticut is ever mentioned.

The story is based on a couple and their daughter, who just moved into a new home in the countryside of Georgia. Their daughter begins seeing people or ghosts, and the story of who lived on this property years ago begins to unfold. It has to do with the underground railroad, slavery and is supposedly 'based on a true story'.

Overall it's a good film. It has a pretty good story-line and manages to keep you interested throughout, with constant ghost scenes. The movie really strives on it's good acting by Chad Michael Murray, Abigal Spencer & Emily Alyn Lind.

A true ghost story, and very well done. Definitely worth a watch!

surprisingly good!
I like that it was based on the under ground railroad, it was a good movie I would recommend it & im hard to impress!

Dragon [Blu-ray]

A Warning to Film Enthusiasts
*This is not a review of the content of the film*

I thought it would be prudent to post this disclaimer on Amazon as it directly effected my decision to NOT buy this version of this movie.

THIS IS NOT THE ORIGINAL VERSION, but rather one that has been edited and shortened by the American Studio handling the domestic release.
Also, changes have been made to some of the music as well.

Now, I'm sure some people don't care about this sort of thing, and you who don't will get an acceptable movie if you decide to buy this. Personally I am a bit of a purist and get offended when some Suits who had nothing to do with making a movie suddenly start cutting bits out and generally messing it about.

If you've got the scratch to spend, you can get the undiluted Chinese release here: Wu Xia Blu-Ray (Region A) (English Subtitled) Donnie Yen

That is all, and may you get...

Great movie, but this is a bad DVD
This movie looks like Donnie's best since IP MAN 1 & 2. Think of it as a Chinese "History of Violence" but set 100 years ago, and with martial arts. Great acting and action. Donnie's acting ability has gotten very very good. I think he'll end up with a better catalogue of work than either Jackie Chan or Jet Li. Unfortunately this DVD was horrible. The picture is soft, lacks any sort of detail and contrast, and has lots of pixelation. The subtitle track is poorly translated and not timed correctly. I recommend this movie, but not this particular DVD.

Horrible quality DVD
Obviously downloaded from the internet and burned on a DVD. Subtitles don't make sense and are not timed correctly. The artwork is blurry. Look for a better version.

Jackie Chan: Police Story / Police Story II [Blu-ray]

Bundles two of Jackie Chan's best
Continuing with their Jackie Chan Double Feature collection, "Police Story" and "Police Story 2" are now together on one disc thanks to Shout! Factory. Being a huge Jackie Chan fan, these were two films that were already well established in this household. However, Shout! Factory did such a superb job with the last Jackie Chan Double Feature that bundled "Crime Story" and "The Protector" together that this suddenly became a necessity.

After revisiting "Police Story," there definitely doesn't seem to be much of any new material in the cut of the feature film. However, there are quite a few bonus features that may whet your appetite. There are a little over two minutes of Deleted Scenes that are mostly just an extra few frames here and there, an Alternate Ending that is mostly an extra 30-45 seconds compared to the original ending with some outtakes attached, an Extended Opening that revolves around Chan Ka Kui arriving to the police station from training and Kim's birthday,...

RIDING SHOTGUN

Over the years I have met various film directors who claim they'd studied the film-making of Buster Keaton and had been influenced by Keaton's 1920s cinema-language defining work and mind-warping, eye-boggling stunts.

Keaton's superb timing and physical form leapt from the screen as if he defied gravity and mortal injury, with grace to spare.

Jackie Chan has been quoted that Buster Keaton was a major influence to him in many of his films.

SHOUT Factory has just released two of Jackie's Police Story movies on one Blu-Ray!

In Police Story, alone, if you are familiar with Keaton's work, you can see that in Jackie's case he wasn't just talking words.

I can find moments in Police Story and Police Story 2 where Jackie displays not only his incredible, balletic actions, but shows the influence of not just Buster Keaton, but also Douglas Fairbanks and Harold...

Another great movie
I had been looking for both of these movies and to fine them both in one selection was great. Would like it better if there were two disks, let's be honest it cost very little for a disk, rather in a flip disk style.

Django Unchained

If John Ford and Kinji Fukasaku had a baby....
I really liked Django Unchained, or as I like to call it: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence right through the eyeball and then the bullet continued through about 7 other torsos, shot out from a guy's belly button bringing a plume of intestines with it, ricocheted off someone's jugular vein, then snapped the cord holding up a chandelier causing said chandelier to plummet like a lead balloon, crushing the skulls of various evil varmints and polecats and then plunging into an occupied outhouse where the dynamite was also stored, causing the outhouse to explode in a crimson rain of blood, guts and offal.

But I guess all that wouldn't fit on the poster.

Django has everything you'd want in a movie, action, humor, suspense, drama, and even some romance, all washed down with gallons of blood. Did I mention some beautiful western vistas? it's got those too. And there are plenty of refernces to some of the geat westerns of the past, some of them only visual so pay...

Exactly what I wanted and expected from a Tarantino Western
Yes it's violent and bloody, and yes, the "n" word is used liberally throughout the movie, but it's a Tarantino film taking place in pre-Civil War South for pete's sake. What would you expect?
All three leading actors were amazing. Fox & Waltz were insanely good. Beautifly shot and a compelling story that I was never quite sure how all would be resolved (other than knowing a bunch a folks were gonna die).
In honor of Roger Ebert, I give it two thumbs up. R.I.P. Mr. Ebert.

A vision of history that only Tarantino can bring us...
As an avid fan of Quentin Tarantino, there's a level of quality that I expect from each film that he makes. I expect to connect with his characters, but not necessarily like any of them. I expect to see a film that satisfies the film geek in me. More than anything, I expect to see a film that entertains throughout the prerequisite bloated running time.

"Django Unchained" is nearly three hours long. But it never feels that long, it entertains and surprises every step along the way. When I first checked my watch, we were already two hours into the film. All of Tarantino's films are usually about this long. Tarantino has been having fun with fictionalizing historical periods lately. This started with 2009's "Inglourious Basterds", which was easily one of the best films of that year. My eighty-something year old grandmother, who lived through the time that the film depicted - World War II - said that if events actually happened as they did in that film, that we would be living...

One Day On Earth

A Massive Video Project Becomes An Impressive Collage Travelogue
The story behind the new film "One Day On Earth" is almost more fascinating than the movie itself! The project, which was proposed in 2008, was to have a global community come together and film footage of their native country at some point on October 10, 2010. Meaning to unite universal awareness, heighten interest in growing world concerns, and put environmental activism in the spotlight, the experiment became of interest to groups around the world who wanted to document important social issues. This collaborative media event was followed by one on 11/11/11 and another on 12/12/12. Generating thousands of hours of footage, in every language conceivable, the project has amassed a huge Internet following of those looking to make a difference both locally and on a global scale.

It would be fair to say that "One Day On Earth" is a feature length documentary based on the footage archived from 10/10/10. But in the traditional sense, it is more of a collage style sensory...

Humbling, Troubling, and Moving
In this age of the internet where we are supposedly more connected than any time in history, One Day on Earth serves as an inspirational, yet daunting reminder of the diversity and fragility of our species and planet. Filmed in every country on earth on October 10, 2010, I have never watched a film that captured our similarities as humans, while simultaneously documenting our disparity as nations and cultures. The entitled and the embattled are all present and accounted for, including an overview from beyond earth's atmosphere. I've seen this film three times now, and have come away from each viewing with different lasting impressions. It is a film that is greater than the sum of its many extraordinary parts. I do not wish to give away my favorite moments. I would rather you watch and discover for yourself. I am simply happy this film was made, and look forward to the remaining installments, filmed on 11/11/11 and 12/12/12. As this film was made in every country on earth, so should it...

Incredibly Inspiring and Eye-Opening
What an interesting idea for a film, and so well executed. A look at the world as a whole, unified, yet so torn apart at the same time. It's hard throughout the film to remember that these events are all occurring on the same day, but once you remind yourself-it's fascinating. It makes you feel so small, but part of something so much bigger than you can relaly imagine.

Overall, a truly unique and inspiring film. Highly recommend.

Pedal-Driven

What Exactly Is A Bikeumentary? A Technically Impressive And Surprisingly Even-Handed Documentary
The new documentary feature "Pedal-Driven" examines a conflict that, frankly, I had no awareness of. In federally regulated wildlands, there has been an on-going rift between mountain bikers who want to enjoy these areas and the managers and rangers tasked with protecting them. This self-proclaimed "Bikeumentary" takes the issue at hand and brings it down to its most basic components. The 63 minute film, by its very nature, seems predisposed to be on the side of the bikers. It would appear, at first glance, to wear its bias on its sleeve. But I have to credit writer/director Jamie Howell for creating an end result that is surprisingly even-handed and illuminating. Both sides are given equal time, and both are allowed to present credible testimony to why the conflict exists. The question, therefore, never really becomes who is right and who is wrong. Instead, the film challenges us to see the necessity of compromise and communication. The two factions don't have to be on...

At first the U S Forest Service treated the Bikers like the enemies of the wilderness that they were there to preserve as the Bikers made all sorts of nifty trails that were exciting & often challanging to ride on, often creating curves, bridges, jumps, etc., that the U S Forest Service would tear down. Finally a showdown between the Bikers and the U S Forest Service happened and the rest is history that you'll have to watch this grass roots but professional DVD to see what developed from a lot of people challanging the Forest Service for THEIR rights to enjoy the wilderness. After all, This country belongs to all the people to enjoy, not just for some government agency to ride rough-shod over its citizens. An agency that we ALL as private citizens pay for. A GREAT...

Attack of the Herbals

This Scottish Silliness May Not Be For Everyone, But It Is Exactly My Cup Of Tea
I'm not the kind of person that gives every movie that I like 5 stars. I give many more 3 and 4 star reviews, so it may seem surprising that I'd recommend the odd little Scottish film "Attack of the Herbals" so highly. It certainly isn't a movie that will garner glowing critical praise or win awards, but somehow the movie just spoke to me. It embraces its lunacy so completely AND it is exactly what it intends to be with no pretensions other than to be a silly entertainment. Some people will undoubtedly loathe this movie and dismiss it as a "Shaun of the Dead" wannabe. It certainly aspires to a similar vibe, so I can't argue against the comparison. But "Shaun" is more polished, this underdog film is more scrappy. Is "Attack of the Herbals" for everyone? Probably not. But if you don't enter into the experience with a lot of preconceived notions (I actually imagined the film was going to be terrible, I had just hoped it would be fun), you might find yourself enjoying this manic...

Stuff Happens
Attack of the Herbals is an outrageously offensive film. It hits on a lot of offensive things, and yet I sort of enjoyed this movie.

In order to enjoy this film, it is important to not be easily offended by Nazis, gore, vomit, and strong language. Getting past those four hurdles, this film is surprisingly well made. It has certain funny moments. It isn't Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz funny - those films are classics and have a complex story line along with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost who were some of the funniest actors in the world.

The film opens with a Nazi drug experiment, and a great big case of something is put out to sea. The Scottish part of the film finds Jackson going back to his hometown to live with his grandparents. Jackson and his buddy Russell discover a crate that looks an awful lot like the one in the opening sequence (yeah, suspend belief here that a crate floated around the ocean for 80 years and didn't rot or fall apart - but that's OK, logic...

Loads of Chuckles
Although low budget, the acting is very good and as said before, the ridiculousness of the whole situation makes for a very entertaining viewing.
It has been a long time since I had as good a laugh at a film, this one has it in bounds.
I;ll add no more to the storyline, buy it, watch it, love it and laugh with it!

Sally, Irene, and Mary

Pleasant musical in no frills package
By 1938, Alice Faye was big news at the boxoffice and "Sally, Irene and Mary" was one in a series of lightweight musical comedies which built her to stardom. This one capitalised on her recent marriage to Tony Martin of the smooth tenor. Their rapport, particularly singing the duet "I could use a Dream" is obvious. The film traces the exploits of 3 manicurists who are trying to break into showbusiness as vocalists. The other two are Joan Davis, of the broad comedy, and Marjorie Weaver, being singled out for stardom but never making the big time. Daryl F. Zanuck, head of the studio, had a very successful formula with these musicals, filling them with comedians and specialty acts. In this one, Jimmy Durante has an amusing role, Fred Allen, famous in radio, has a prominent part, Louise Hovick (Gypsy Rose Lee) is on board for some acid comedy, the Brian Sisters appear in the swing number "Who Stole the Jam" and Gregory Ratoff steals every scene in which he appears. The musical highlight...

Alice Faye is wonderful but Jimmy Durante steals the show
I bought this DVD because I'm a big fan of Alice Faye and because so few of her films from the middle 1930s are available on DVD or VHS. I was not disappointed with the film and I'm thrilled to see this one available on DVD. Thank you, 20th Century Fox for finally seeing that there is a market for these films!

I have had CDs and record albums featuring the songs from this film for years and it's nice to finally hear them in the context of the film! The big surprise for me was the delightful number by Jimmy Durante, which was not included on any CD I have. As usual, he's a scene stealer and pretty much leaves the rest of the cast in the dust whenever he's in the mix.

As part of the Fox Cinema Archives series, this DVD is completely bare bones: no chapters, no trailer, no extras of any kind - just the movie.

Alice, Joan and Marjorie Weaver are manicurists who dream of their chance singing in a Broadway review. Through a series of mishaps and Jimmy...

Singing, dancing... and Fred Allen!
First off, I have to confess I am not big on musicals. I got this film because I am a fan of Fred Allen, and you don't get many chances to see him on your TV screen!

The story is pretty standard for the genre. If you like good old singing and dancing, there is a lot here for you.

Fred Allen does a good job as the manager of Sally, Irene, and Mary, aspiring performers who are down to their last can of beans. Gregory Ratoff plays a rich foreigner who "wants a honeymoon", and keeps changing his mind on who to have it with! Jimmy Durante has a rather small role as a street sweeper, who ends up working with Allen, and has one singing number.

Of course, Alice Faye and Tony Martin do most of the singing.

A light film, not spectacular, but still entertaining. In my highly biased opinion, Fred Allen is the best thing in it!

The Meanest Man In The World

The Meanest Man in the World... Well, Almost!
Writers George Seaton and Allan House rewrote this play to fit the comedic talents of the legendary Jack Benny. Benny plays a friendly lawyer with the image of being a tightwad. Things are not going well in his professional or personal life. Benny is then convinced by his valet, Anderson, to become mean and uncaring and his business will become successful. Benny agrees and he becomes a financial success. But his girlfriend, played by the beautiful and talented Priscilla Lane, doesn't like the new personality and promptly dumps him. After a highly publicized photo of Benny taking candy from a baby he's dubbed "The Meanest Man in the World" by the New York City papers. Can Benny change his new found image? Can he win the respect of the girl he loves? Can he find his redemption? This is a Benny movie worthy of belonging to your collection.

For Benny Completists Only
Some of my fondest memories as a kid was rushing home from school to watch repeats of "The Jack Benny Program" on UHF. I loved Jack's deadpan delivery, his tightwad persona, and his supporting cast. His influence would later be exhibited by performers like Johnny Carson and Bob Newhart. This film disappointed me somewhat. At a brief 57 minutes it seems a little stretched out. Even at half the running time there's not enough material sufficient for a single episode of Jack's TV show. Highlights of the film are the exchanges between Jack and Eddie "Rochester" Anderson. Divorce those moments and your not really left with much. Not a complete waste of time but not on the level of Jack's other screen ventures like "Charley's Aunt" or "To Be or Not To Be".

Entertaining Old Movie
Good old Jack Benny comedy. Made during the war. I remembered it from seeing it in my youth, so it made some sort of lasting impression. Upon seeing it now, much of the humor might be considered racist, but Rochester gave it to Benny even more than Benny gave it to Rochester.

I enjoyed it. Definitely a B (budget) movie..

A Bottle in the Gaza Sea

Borders: 'You think war can be gentle?'
`Une bouteille à la mer' or A Bottle in the Gaza Sea is at once an incredibly tender love story restricted to the Internet and an intensive exploration of both side of the Israeli and Palestinian dilemma that begs for resolution. The story is by Valérie Zenatti and has been adapted for the screen and directed by French writer/director Thierry Binisti. While the content of the relationship between the main characters is fragile it serves as an exposé of how seemingly impossible life must be living in that small area of the world so vulnerable to repeated hostilities.

The film opens sensitively at the beach - there is a barbed wire barricade separating parts of the beach - and a young man (Eytan Levine - Abraham Belaga) is throwing a whiskey bottle into the ocean. Inside the bottle is a letter from Etyan's sister Tal (Agathe Bonitzer) requesting that whoever finds the bottle to please email her where the bottle was found and who found it. Tal is 17 and...

Separated By More Than A Sea: Can You See Past A Lifetime of Hatred And Conflict?
The sensitive international drama "A Bottle in the Gaza Sea" reflects on the Israeli and Palestinian conflict in an extremely personal way. It posits that those on both sides hold more common ground than you might imagine. But between history and politics, the bad blood continues into the next generation. With children indoctrinated into preexisting prejudices due to almost constant bloodshed, there seems to be no potential end in sight. What if, however, we could open a dialogue? What if we could see beyond an ideology and see the individuals involved? The confused teen at the heart of Thierry Binisti's heartfelt film is looking for nothing more than understanding. The violence that she witnesses close to home cause her to search for answers, and this quest leads to the unlikely long distance friendship at the heart of the film. In many ways, this is a coming-of-age story told from two unique perspectives. And as both of the story threads play out, the movie expertly contrasts the...

a MUST-SEE for anyone interested in the Israeli-Palestine conflict
I recently saw this movie at the 2013 Jewish and Israeli Film Festival here in Cincinnati. I now notice that this movie is scheduled for a DVD release by Film Movement. I absolutely love the Film Movement library of foreign and indie movies, so this makes complete sense to me.

"A Bottle in the Gaza Sea" (2011 release from France/Israel; 99 min.) brings the story of the 17 yr. old French-Jewish girl Tal whose family moved from Paris to Jerusalem. Tal is frustrated by the thread of violence from the Gaza Strip and throws a bottle in the sea, hoping someone in Gaza will get it and respond to her invitation to correspond with her via email. A group of young men in Gaza in fact do find the bottle, and 20 yr. old Naim emails her. After initial suspiscion between the two, a fragile friendship develops, and Naim takes up French at the Gaza French Cultural Center, with the hope of eventually getting a scholarship to study in France. Meanwhile Tal's brother Eytan serves in the...

Pentagon Wars, The

Hilarious but soberly outrageous--often simultaneously
This movie was a real surprise. I rented it on vacation when neither my son, my wife, nor myself could agree. I just saw that Olympia Dukakis and Richard Benjamin were in it and he directed. And, it was a comedy.

But this film is the blackest of comedies. And the very scenes that were the most hilarious were also those that engendered outrage in me, gradually at first, and then with a rushing forward.

It is the true story of the latter stages of development of the Bradley armoured vehicle which was featured in the Gulf War, and the Air Force officer, James Burton, whose task, by Congressional edict, was to sign off on the final testing of the vehicle. Without his approval the Bradley could not go into production.

The film is based on his book.

What he discovered was that the Bradley's design had evolved from a fast troop transport to a mish-mash of everything, making it unsuitable for each of its now numerous and contradictory roles.

Worse, however, was that the vehicle...

A Frightening Look at the Procurement Process
This film would be hilarious were it not so frightening.

This film is not portrayed as a documentary Still, it purports to reflect in a semi-accurate manner the convulsions that attended the development of the Bradley fighting vehicle. Based on news reports, it contains more than a bit of truth, even if there is some dramatic license being employed.

The conflict in this film is between a conscientious officer who wants to do real testing and a pentagon general who wants to make contractors and politicians happy. It is a sad state of affairs.

The development of the Bradley had a long history before it ever reached deployment. It was plagued by cost overruns, changing specifications and failed tests. It even went through a phase where it was supposed to be aquatic. In the end, a troop carrier for 11 troops became a scout vehicle that was too prominent to do scout work, had a turret like a tank so it would attract extra fire, had aluminum armor so it...

Brilliantly on target
It is well-known that when it comes to procurement, the Department of Defense does not usually put a priority on such incidentals as whether the item actually works. DOD history is cluttered with such gold-plated duds as the Sergeant York gun and the infamous $7600 coffeemaker. "The Pentagon Wars," a made-for-cable film originally aired on HBO, is a devastatingly satirical -- and true -- look at one such boondoggle, the Bradley Fighting Vehicle.

Col. James Burton (Cary Elwes) is a by-the-books Air Force officer who is given the job of making sure the Bradley is effective and ready for use. He quickly learns that the vehicle is a Frankenstein's monster, designed by committee and unable to do any of the tasks it was meant for, but which is being built anyway. In his attempts to adequately test the vehicle, Burton is up against Gen. Partridge (Kelsey Grammer), who is determined to get the Bradley into production no matter what. After all, it has been 17 years in design, with $14...

Fortress

Survival of the Fittest.
Like many people who have seen this film, I saw it when I was a kid in the early 1980s on HBO. The plot revolves around a young school teacher and the children of various ages that she teaches in a schoolhouse in Australia. The teacher and the children are kidnapped by men wearing masks who are planning on holding their victims for a hefty ransom and perhaps a little "fun" with the teacher and the eldest girl. The movie is suspenseful and full of action as the victims escape from one holding area to another until the end when they take a stand, make a fortress, and take things into their own hands.

Scenes from this movie have stuck with me my whole life. I had nightmares for weeks about the masked bandits coming after me and for awhile I could never look at a Daffy Duck mask the same again. I also vividly remember the students and teacher making a last stand at the old cave where they made their fortress. I was always impressed by how crafty those group of kids were and...

This film is full of suspense!
I first saw this movie on cable TV (I'm pretty sure) about 7 or 8 years ago! I was most likely in the 4th or 5th grade. It was absolutely stunning and created all kinds of suspense in my mind. Was the young woman and her students going to die or we're they along for a horrible joy ride? I have been looking for this movie for the 7 or 8 years since I've seen it. Until about 2 weeks ago, a friend has enlightened me with the title of this movie!! I was asking all sorts of people about it and describing all that I had remembered, but didn't even know the title! WELL, IF YOU WANT A GREAT MOVIE TO WATCH, THIS IS THE ONE! I hope to GOD, it gets re-released again....can we email the distributer? What's their name? Thanks......

Ask that Fortress be Re-Released!
Fortress, starring Rachel Ward - Australian siren of 80's movies, gives one of her best performances in this action/suspense thriller. The story takes place in a tiny town in the outback of Australia. Ward plays Sally Jones, a teacher who, along with her class, is kidnapped by a group of masked men who hope for a large ransom, in exchange for the group. The only hope for Sally and her class is escape into the wilds of the outback. The school children and their teacher push the narrative forward with heart-stopping action and relentless suspense which ends with a spine-tingling conclusion. If this movie sounds interesting, write to amazon.com and asked that it be re-released. It's currently unavailable.

Jacob: Unrated Director's Cut [Blu-ray]

Throwback indie horror
Beware: spoilers! Jacob isn't exactly a good film but it gets points for being highly idiosyncratic. It reminded me of the 1970's when some filmmaker would come out of nowhere to make a weird horror flick for the drive-in circuit and then never be heard from again. What Jacob lacks in slickness it more than makes up for in personality, which makes it a much more interesting watch than most indie horror movies that go straight to video and which are made by people with film school educations and technical skills but no actual ideas. Jacob concerns a dysfunctional family in late 1970's Texas--an abused waitress, her violent, alcoholic boyfriend and her two children--a sweet little girl and her towering, speechless older brother. There are also weird flashbacks involving the siblings biological father who discovers an Evil Dead style book under the floorboards of a house he has inherited. This particular element lets you know you're watching a horror movie, although it's never...

OTIS IS A BAD MAN
Otis (Larry Wade Carrell) is the town drunk. He is not the likeable Otis from Mayberry, but one that abuses his overly dependent punching bag girlfriend and waitress Edith (Krystn Caldwell). Edith has two children. Sissy (Grace Powell) is the wiser and younger of the two. Jacob (Dylan Horne) is the mentally challenged Tor Johnson looking guy. He is not a very nice person either and he has a wonderful head twitch.

This all sets up for a darling of a slasher film. However 30 minutes into the film, there is a scene that makes you go "huh?" It is an interesting scene, one that has the potential to change the direction of the film and make it something you didn't expect. Unfortunately this aspect was never developed to its potential, as it appears writer/director Larry Wade Carrell did not know what to do with this "twist" once he introduced it, which is sad.

The acting was not top notch, along with some of the dialouge, it was a shade campy. This made the film...

A Monster In Paris (Blu-Ray + 3-D Blu-Ray + DVD + Digital Copy)

-M- FANS BEWARE: NO FRENCH LANGUAGE TRACK
A Monster In Paris (Un Monstre à Paris) is a 2011 French animated film by former DreamWorks animator Bibo Bergeron (director of Road to El Dorado, and more embarrassingly, SharkTale). Yes, that's right, 2011. The film first released theatrically in France in October 2011, and then in the United Kingdom with the English dub in January 2012.
In April of 2013, OVER 16 MONTHS LATER, the United States is just now receiving an official release.

Which is utterly baffling, considering that even before the film's French release, A Monster In Paris went viral and gathered a cult following on the internet, with a large percentage of these fans American (myself included), due to the film's beautiful animation and music.
The music in this film is by Matthieu Chedid, better known by his stage name -M-. I became a fan of -M- and his music through A Monster In Paris. I now own three of -M-'s albums, having imported the CDs from France.

So you can imagine my...

An adorable animated movie with stunning music
When I first saw clips of this movie on YouTube, including the by-now-famous song "La Siene," I was so impressed that I immediately began scouring the Internet for a US release date for the movie. When I learned there were no plans for a US release, I was rather disappointed, but I wouldn't let that deter me from seeing this movie. In the end, I splurged and purchased two copies of the DVD (one for myself, one for our local library) from Amazon's Canadian store.

Now seeing that there's an upcoming US DVD release, I'm kicking myself for not being more patient, but I don't regret having purchased this. It's a beautiful movie, and while maybe not quite Pixar quality it's adorable and charming in its own right.

"A Monster In Paris" takes place in 1910 Paris, during the flooding of the Siene river, and focuses on a short, shy theater worker named Emile and his eccentric, bombastic friend Raoul, a delivery man who fancies himself an inventor. While dropping off a...

Love the music.
I am a French teacher and I can't wait to use this movie as a culmination of our study of Paris (I teach younger children). Vanessa Paradis has an angelic quality to her singing that fits this role perfectly. I appreciate the innocent storyline, there are no adult references or innuendo as there are in so many Disney movies.

Grapes of Death

When preying on humans, the red or the white wine?
Only having seen three of Jean Rollin's films, I will not attempt to give you any insight into this interesting French director. My opinion of this film is the same as the other two I have seen by him: occasionally boring, yet well done with some good bloody moments. Out of the three I've seen, this is a little less exciting than The Living Dead Girl, yet less dull than The Night of the Hunted.

The story is pretty straightforward: a girl is attacked by a zombie on a train, leaves the train, then roams the French countryside looking for people who can help her with the ever-increasing zombie problem. The Grapes of Death title refers to wine made from pesticide-laced grapes, which is responsible for turning people into the zombies. It's different than, say, your typical Romero or Fulci zombiefest in that the people turn into the living dead gradually. It'll be just a hand decaying at first, for example, and the FX showing this and the other gore scenes are pretty effective...

Gory, sleazy zombie flick
Jean Rollin is a name instantly recognizable to hardcore horror fans, yet meaningless to nearly everyone else. This ignorance is quite unfortunate because the French director concocted some of the sleaziest, most unusual films ever made during the 1970s and 1980s, films usually imbued with a disturbing mix of hypereroticism and bloody violence. I have often tossed Rollin's name around in impolite company with seeming aplomb even though I had never seen even one of the man's films. You read enough plot synopses about someone and you start to feel as though you know every intimate detail about their work. What I did hear from others about this director oftentimes did not bode well. He is apparently well versed in schlock filmmaking, which in and of itself is not a problem with me, a true lover of bad cinema, but several of his films continue to draw raves from a selected minority of genre fans. Well, I finally sat down with a Jean Rollin film, his 1979 effort "Fascination," and was...

The Grapes of Death
Jean Rollin achieves what many consider to be his finest work in THE GRAPES OF DEATH, which also serves as one of the first French Gore films. This second dubious honor is a bit misleading, however, as the film is intended to be a surreal fantasy rather than a zombie shocker. A woman returning home to her family's vineyard is horrified to discover that the pesticides being used on the local crops have turned the villagers into the living dead! As is the case in the majority of his pictures, plot and character become secondary to creating a visual canvas (a trait that would carry over into the works of Lucio Fulci). Rollin paints the French landscape in mists, fogs, and dilapidated buildings, which add to the rich atmosphere and eerie setting. His zombies still retain shreds of their humanity, with many of the ghouls begging to be put out of their pain and misery as the rot eats them alive. One of the film's most disturbing sequences finds a blind girl stumbling over the bodies of her...

Last of the Blonde Bombshells

Judi Rules !
I agree completely with the other positive reviews of "The Last of the Blonde Bombshells", so I'll not repeat the plot details, and other comments. The film is a delight !
I must express my frustration that witty, poignant films like this, clearly aimed at an older audience, do not seem to appear in the local cineplex.
There may be one or two actresses in the world as good as Dame Judi--but none are better. She really shines here, even in a cast of superb veteran British actors, not to mention non-Brits Dukakis and Caron. So nice to see Ms. Caron on screen again, even in a cameo, some 50 years after "An American in Paris".
So--a real winner--and the price is right.
Recommended.

One very sad footnote--I believe that this was Joan Sims' last
film. Ms. Sims was a delightful character actress, and, of course, an indispensible member of the legendary "Carry On Gang".
She will be missed.

Who Am I?
A woman's movie, "The Last of the Blonde Bombshells" was both nostalgic and provocative. The cast included first-rate actors Dame Judi Dench, Olympia Dukakis, Ian Holm, and Leslie Caron who never disappoint. Add to this the vocal artistry of Cleo Lane performing the songs of the forties era, and you are transported to your own long ago and far away.

Dame Judi Dench portrays an aging woman who has just lost her husband. Her marriage brought her love and family, a fair share of things material and . . . contentment. But she is at the point now when she can reflect on her life and "The Girl Who Used to Be Me" (theme song from the equally poignant movie, "Shirley Valentine").

Much of the movie, for me, centered on the relationship between the grandmother and her young granddaughter. In a particularly moving scene near the beginning of the film, the granddaughter comes into her grandmother's home to find her alone upstairs playing a tenor...

One of The Very Best Movies I Have Ever Seen
This wonderful movie is a must for those of us who remember the good old days, when music was played by real musicians, who could read music. This is another WW 2 movie and there are hundreds of them, but this is a bitter sweet comedy drama that will make you sit back and close your eyes and transport yourself back into the era which many call, "The greatest musical period of the 20th century. Judi Dench surly deserved an award for her performance of a grandmother saxophone player who played with an all girls band during the war. She was the star. She had not played in years and after her husband had died her little grandaughter asked her to pu the band back together to play at her school dance. The story of how this came about is funny, sad, sentimental and entertaining. I will leave the rest for you to see, but I give this a 5 star rating and if there 10 stars it would get that. Enjoy an afternoon with these ladies and relax, you are in for an enjoyable time.

Copacabana [Blu-ray]

It's enough to make me have a nervous breakup !!!
Groucho Marx and Carmen Miranda star in this rather humorous movie entitled Copacabana. Although Amazon states that not all the material is first rate, I personally liked it very much. The plot moves along at a good pace and the action never stops in this zany, funny story.

Lionel Q. Deveraux (Groucho Marx) and his fiancée of ten years Carmen Novarro (Carmen Miranda) simply can't make it in show business despite years of trying their best. After they get kicked out of the famous Copacabana nightclub they must face the hotel night clerk who threatens to kick them of their hotel as well because they can't pay their bills. Lionel has a brainstorm: he'll become Carmen's manager and book her at The Copa no matter what!

At first, the owner of the nightclub, Steve Hunt (Steve Cochran), doesn't want to even try out Carmen--until she magically appears doing her number. Steve likes her after all; and trouble ensues when Steve asks Lionel if he has other acts to...

Miranda and Marx save the movie...just!
Copacabana(May/47)stars the irrepressible Groucho Marx and the beautiful and talented Carmen Miranda. This movie was a first of sorts for both of them.It was Groucho's first film foray since his split with his brothers and this was Carmen's first strut before the cameras since leaving 20th Century Fox.If it wasn't for the talents of these two the film would be completely forgettable.
The story here involves a "talent agent" Lionel Deveraux(Marx) whose sole client is Carmen(Miranda).Desperate for a job for Carmen he goes to the Copacabana club, owned and run by Mr.Cochran(Steve Hunt)with his faithful secretary by his side Anne Stuart(Gloria Jean). He manages to weasel a quick audition for Carmen which seems to go well. However Cochran is not quite satisfied ,as he had more of a singing chanteuse in mind. After a quick change(she has her face partially covered with a veil) Carmen comes back as Mademoiselle Fifi and wows Cochran with a number in French. He tells Devereaux he will take...

It's...... Groucho! (and Carmen is fun too!)
Just enough gags and zippy one-liners to make it worth the price of admission for Groucho fans. It's only a pity the other brothers are nowhere in sight. I didn't care much for the musical numbers, but that's what the fast-forward button is for.

The picture quality is great and the audio is clear. No Marx Bros. collection is complete without it!

Just a correction...
A previous reviewer heaped praise on Criterion for "remastering and releasing" Etaix's films to the public. I don't disagree with that sentiment, though it should be limited to releasing the films to the US public. Criterion isn't in the job of remastering, and this was done for the Etaix films by Etaix himself in 2010, with financial support from the Groupama Gan Foundation, and Technicolor Foundation for Cinema Heritage. We have these versions here, with new subtitles and various features.

Again, this isn't to slight Criterion. If it wasn't for them, it's difficult to think of another publisher that would purchase the US rights to these films. Praise all around, then.

Wake of the Red Witch

The Duke finds love & a giant octopus in classic adventure!
I can't believe this is the first 5-star review of "Wake of the Red Witch". Ever since I was a child it's been one of my very favorite John Wayne films. Maybe it's the greedy quest for the valuable pearls, or the conflict between Captain Ralls (John Wayne) & Captain Sydneye (Luther Adler), who compete fiercely for both the treasure & the lovely Angelique (Gail Russell). Or maybe it's the doomed romance that makes this so watchable. The Duke was awesome with Gail Russell in this classic as well as the wonderful western "Angel & the Badman". John Wayne made some of his best movies in the late 40's, but for some reason this classic (from 1949) has been largely forgotten. Well, at least it's on dvd. The picture quality is very good but unfortunately there are no special features, not even the trailer. If you're a big John Wayne fan & want to see him in a rare non-western role, then this is a definite must-see!

The DUKE and Gail, together again!
After the classic "Angel and the Badman", DUKE and Gail Russell paired again for this effort, "Wake of the Red Witch".

A tale of the effects revenge, greed, and bittnerness can have on people, the story traces the duel of words and intrigue between two men; Captain Ralls (The DUKE), and shipping magnate Mayrant Sidneye.

DUKE skippers Sidneye's prize ship, the Red Witch, and purposely wrecks her in a plan to cheat Sidneye out of a cargo of gold. Turns out that Sidneye had plotted to steal away DUKE's girl, Angelique Desaix (played by the lovely and angelic Gail Russell).

Tricking DUKE into a fatal confrontation with the girl's father, Sidneye is able to marry Angelique before The DUKE can set things right. This leads to her unhappiness, and The DUKE takes revenge on Sidneye by wrecking the Red Witch.

A wonderful study of greed, revenge, and redmption, we see the tale through the eyes of a young seaman (Gig Young), who Ralls sees as his younger...

Garland Roark's Novel Brought to the Screen
This seemingly obscure 1949 movie produced quietly during some of John Wayne's greatest years of stardom is an overlooked excellent and well written drama. The movie ties into the original story and actually opens the original book and begins the narration of Chapter one at the hands of the first mate. The story revolves around scuttling a sailing vessel "The Red Witch" that contained a cargo of five million in Gold Bullion. There is competition between the owners and Captain Ralls (John Wayne) who plays an ambivilant character who sides with whatever group is most advantageous at the time. The story is told from the perspective of the first mate and utilized the "flashback" technique similar to "Casablanca" but spends considerable time filling you in on how the present situation developed. Although this is in glorious B&W, the island scenery and romance of the age of sail work wonders along with casual romances and adventure to make this a great and interesting film to watch.

Promised Land (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet)

ABSOLUTE MADNESS
This is a soft hitting environmental film. Steve Butler (Matt Damon) represents Global which wants to buy the gas drilling rights to a town. He is from a farming community, but can't drive a stick shift. He is also ill informed of the dangers of fracking. His partner is Sue (Frances McDormand) a working mom who tries to parent from Skype. In the town of Miller's Falls, they meet resistance from Frank (Hal Holbrook) the local science teacher and an environmental activist (John Krasinski).

Rob (Titus Welliver) who owns Rob's Guns and Groceries is sweet on Sue while flirty school teacher Alice (Rosemarie DeWitt) sparks Matt's love interest. The film uses stock cardboard characters to create a nice feel good tale. There is a twist at the end that wasn't too much of a shock. The farmer's have to decide if they want to sell the rights and risk losing their land to environmental poisoning, or wait and lose the land due to poverty as government subsidies dwindle and market prices...

Addressing Environmental Issues
Interesting to note all the negative reviews for PROMISED LAND. Perhaps that is because people expected some big explosion of a story when all that is here is a bit of everyday happenings that accompany this country's struggle with environmental issues. It is a quiet film, exceedingly well written based on a story from Dave Eggers, by Matt Damon and Jon Krasinski who happen to also star in their brainchild - an honest, funny, entertaining, and sensitive tale in the way it plays out the issues and comes up with a surprise ending.

Corporate salesman for Global Enterprises Steve Butler (Matt Damon) arrives in a rural Pennsylvania town with his sales partner, Sue Thomason (Frances McDormand, in one of the finest performances in the film): the two enjoy a warmly written and quite unassuming relationship. Global is a company that drills (read `fracks') for natural gas as alternative fuel form to replace the degrading effects of oil and gasoline on the environment. With the town...

Promised Land Review
Promised Land (2012) - Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting), John Krasinski (The Office), Frances McDormand, Rosemarie DeWitt, Titus Welliver, Hal Holbrook

This film was an Oscar contender and is the first time Matt Damon has written a script since his Oscar win for Good Will Hunting. It centers around a ladder climber at a company called Global Crosspower Solutions, an energy company which deals in natural gas. He goes to a small town with his partner (Frances McDormand) in order to get the town to sign over rights so that his company may begin fracking for natural gas. He is surprised when he encounters resistance from the townsfolk, who are aided by an environmentalist with an axe to grind (Krasinski).

Should you buy it? At times the film can be a bit preachy. It's a well told story, with a couple of nice twists and ultimately a nice little character study. There are political undertones both overt and subtle which astute viewers can pick up on but which aren't 100%...

Cold Prey II

Awesome movie and an Awesome DVD
A truly dramatic and well thought out thriller. Definitely a must-see. Don't any attention to the reviewer who says this is a poor quality "bootleg". Its not. This is the official singapore release that is all-region NTSC and will play in the USA. It is anamorphic widescreen and comes well packaged in a nice glossy slipcase. Whether or not you saw the first installment, this is a good movie, and a good DVD.

COLD PREY 2 is super HOT!!!
Wow Wow Wow is all i have to say! this movie blew me away. I watched part 1 on DVD which is currently out at your local BlockBuster. It was a better than average slasher film with some likable characters. Some nice scenery and gore. It was, i would give it a 3 1/2 stars... you really dont need to watch Part 1 to watch Part 2. All you need to know is a bunch of kids go snow boarding (i know it sounds boring) and they get picked off one by one by a mysterious killer wearing an AWESOME SCARY WINTER PARKA so you never see the killers face (which is great)... anyhow, Part 2 is so well directed and the tension builds up quickly. The main survivor of Part 1 is now in a hospital, that is pretty secluded mind ya (which we all love to hear right??) and Its sort of like Halloween 2 where she is stuck there. I wont tell you anything else but when the cops return to the hospital/morgue with the bodies of all her friends they also return someone or something that NOBODY EXPECTED!!! WATCH IT. I...

Very Pleased With This Movie!
This movie starts with the ending of the original movie, COLD PREY, and never stops. It is very creepy, very atmospheric, and the acting team is spot-on! If you liked Cold Prey, you will love this one! If you want to watch a really good horror movie, I strongly recommend this one!

Thale BD/combo [Blu-ray]

Perfect Indy Horror/Drama
This is premium quality, foreign, indy film. The characters are well developed, the flash backs are done creatively and cleanly and no one tried to overstep their bounds with effects. I felt genuine emotion during the dramatic sequences and wished it had been longer. I can imagine some people will find fault with specific parts of the movie after having rented/ purchased it but in my opinion this movie delivers what it promises. I wish that the writers had made the time span we get to spend with the three main characters longer and that there had been a few more action sequences. I think it's worth every penny of a rental fee and I would consider purchasing it.

Great Realistic Feel for Indie Fantasy, It is Not Horror
Meet the "Huldra" - a mythological forest creature (humanoid) from Scandinavian Lore. The setting is beautiful at times, but primarily focused upon a woodland cabin (underground warren) and surrounding terrain. However, this low budget Indie approach works, as we experience the daily grind of two men who clean houses, including those with crime scenes or dead occupants. These characters are nicely developed as the story unfolds, and you end up caring about them. They are dealing with the burdens of life - as we all are. Their mundane cleaning assignment takes an "Alice" turn when they decide to fall down the metaphorical rabbit hole only to meet a seemingly "habituated" Huldra. The performances are good all around, with the actors carrying the water without much dialogue - they must rely upon emotion, interaction, flashbacks, physical, etc. The pace and plot are just fine, albeit slower than the big budget stuff - same feel as Troll Hunter. The CGI was well done for the price, and I...

Thale a modern fairy tale.
Hollywood should take lessons from this film. A simple tale became an excellent film. Huldra's supposingly live in the forest, but this one is special. You won't understand the nature of this gift till the end. It is a remarkable story that is told in the simplest terms. no pretense here. This sits right next to "Let the right one In". I bought this as a pay-for-view and then bought the Blue Ray. It is a great film. Give it a try.

Little Red Wagon

A MUST SEE MOVIE
This was an outstanding movie for the whole family!!! However, the quality from Amazon was poor as far as sound and stopping on and off. The cast is excellent and delivers a great message about how anyone can make a difference. I loved the little red head boy---so cute and a fabulous actor. The movie is a warm warm fuzzy!!!

little red wagon
I enjoyed the movie. However I'm not sure that it would hold the attention of younger children. It presented a really great message.

great movie
I recommend this to any one a good one to watch with the family. Just shows that people can make a difference if they just take the first step.

Pawn (Blu-ray + DVD)

A Deliciously Plotted Movie
Give an actor a good role and he'll do it for "nothing".

That axiom certainly applies to the cast of PAWN, a 2013 thriller, now available in a Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack from Anchor Bay Entertainment.

Shot in fifteen days, primarily on a single set and location, PAWN is a low budget tense drama, filled with unexpected plot twists, that features not inexpensive actors like Michael Chiklis, Stephen Lang, Ray Liotta, Nikki Reed, Sean Faris and Forest Whitaker in memorable key roles.

To reveal much about the plot would lead to spoilers, so let's just say that it revolves around the hold-up of an all-night diner that goes terribly wrong. Indeed, just when you think that you've got everything figured out, the scene shifts backward or forward in time, and you are, once again, left wondering. PAWN, directed by David A. Armstrong from Jay Anthony White's well-crafted screenplay, is one of those deliciously plotted movies, like THE USUAL SUSPECTS, that demands a...

Entertaining, but not a classic
Nothing relaxes me more than curling up on the sofa with an interesting movie. It does not have to be a classic that I will watch over and over again, but it has to be entertaining. This movie definitely fits in the entertaining mode. Now if you want to pick it apart with things like character development etc as have been discussed by so many other reviewers, I will agree that it has some weak spots. However, if you take it for what it is...entertainment...it was very enjoyable.

It's a game with lots of moves still left on the board
I received 'Pawn' as an Amazon Vine reviewer and just watched it last night.

An action thriller that keeps you guessing all the way through, it's got a lot to like for those who enjoy the genre as I do. Great acting by some well known and not-so well known actors, with stories interwoven in such a way that it holds your interest the entire way through.

Good cops, bad cops, reformed thugs and in the moment predators all collide at an all-night diner. There's no doubt it's going to get bloody, but what's it really all for? Just a quick hold up for jewelry and cash? Nah... there's more at stake than that, and the innocents caught in the middle struggle to understand and survive.

I'd recommend this film based upon Michael Chiklis' Irish accent alone! (Maybe it was English? Whatever... liked it.) Ray Liotta is basically 'Good Fellas' gone gray, but hey, it's Ray. Forest Whitaker did a great job in his small role, and the supporting cast was...
